INTRODUCTION

Gather on the floor for circle time and start with a welcome song. We have been singing,“Hello to All the Children of the World”.Each week we briefly spotlight one of the countries in the song. This week we learned a little bit about Israel (Shalom!), starting with finding Israel on theWorld Map.

Here are a fewfun facts about Israel for kids. The link also has an interesting six-minute video about Israel showing its major cities, cultures, and natural beauty.

I also shared some of the religious history that my kids are familiar with that centered in ancient Israel. I really like this brief international focus each week as it keeps my kiddos aware of variety in traditions and languages.

WRITE:Letter K Poke

I introduced the letter K with its straight lines that make up both the uppercase and lowercase letter. I had written K and k on a piece of construction paper.

Over the carpet, my Little used a pin to poke holes all along the letters. This is basically tracing with a pin. You can also use the tip of a paperclip straightened out.

Kids love poking holes for some reason, and it creates a fun effect when you hold the finished letters up to the light.

Play: Letter K Sound Box

I put the letter K on the front of an empty cereal box and called it our K Sound Box. We talked about what sound the letter K makes, and then I spread out several pictures in front of the box.

Little #3 had to figure out which pictures start with the letter K and put those pictures into the K Sound Box.

You can use this free printable for the pictures to do this K Sound Box activity.

Sing: Sing Along Shapes Song

K is for Kites, and Kites are Diamonds!

Next I introduced the k word that we were going to focus on a lot…kites! We talked about what shape a kite is. Then we sang this Sing Along Shapes Song.

The interactive song introduces squares, circles, triangles, and rectangles. It encourages kids to find the shapes in everyday objects. The tune is catchy and simple, one that kids can easily pick-up on and join in.

Play: Shape Scavenger Hunt

We used a simple Shape Scavenger Hunt that I drew, but for you guys, I created this Free Shape Scavenger Hunt Printable. It looks a bit nicer. 😉

Letter K Activities for Preschool (And Free Preschool Lesson Plan: K is for Kite) • Lovin' Life with Littles (12)

Little #3 had to hunt around the house for objects that had the different shapes. He drew pictures of each object within the corresponding shape. I don’t know what it is about scavenger hunts, but my kids always find them fun and exciting. This one was no different!

Talk: Kites, Weather, and Wind

Great job finding all those shapes! Remind me, which shape was our kite? Diamond!

Now, let’s talk a little bit more about kites. We discussed how kites need windy weather in order to fly. We talked about what season we’re most likely to have wind where we live.

Next, we talked in simple terms about why the wind blows. Bill Nye explains wind well in this video, showing how the sun heats the earth, causing the air to warm up and rise when cool air moves in below. As that shifting air moves and the earth spins, wind moves all around the world.

To make our kites fly, the wind pushes against our kite. The wind causes pressure on the kite, just like the wind is created from different pressures. It’s all just energy! If we let go of the kite string, the wind pressure might cause our kite to fly away!

Play: Wind Race

We played a simple game to show how kites are pushed by wind pressure.

Using lightweight objects, such as pieces of tissue paper or feathers, pretend your breath is the wind, and the object is the kite.

Choose a starting line and finish line. On go, blow your object until it gets to the finish line.

Write and Craft: Make a Kite

Of course, we had to actually make a kite for this preschool lesson! You can allow your Littles to use their creativity and engineering minds to decide which materials would be good for kite making. Alternately, you can provide the materials.

Kites generally need materials for four parts.

  1. The Skeleton (Make a cross using straws, small sticks, chopsticks, or similar materials.)
  2. The Body (Cover the cross, creating the diamond shape. Use newspaper, tissue paper, or our favorite is old grocery sacks. They are a great weight for kite making.)
  3. The Tail (Connect crepe paper or ribbons to the bottom of the diamond for a cool visual effect that also stabilizes the kite.)
  4. The String (Use yarn, ribbon, or string to keep your kite from flying away.)

One fun way to craft the kite is to make the body with tissue paper. Use one layer as the base and glue pieces of different colored tissue paper all over it. While this takes a little more time to dry, it creates a really beautiful visual.

You can also write on, draw on, color, or otherwise decorate whatever kite material you use.

Eat: Foods that Begin with the Letter K

Snack time can happen while you read the story (or more than one) or after.

For our snack, I gave Little #3 some pretzel sticks. He had to use the pretzels to make a K and a diamond before he ate them.

Other ideas of foods that start with the letter k are kiwi, Kix, kale (try a fruit and veggie smoothie), kidney beans, or any food that can make a kabob.

Sing: Let’s Go Fly a Kite

We sang Let’s Go Fly a Kite from Mary Poppins. If you’re a Mary Poppins fan, you’ll also appreciate this Fan Sing-Along Version from the street in London before Saving Mr. Banks opened.

This was also a perfect song to include creative movement. Use Dance RibbonsLetter K Activities for Preschool (And Free Preschool Lesson Plan: K is for Kite) • Lovin' Life with Littles (22), make your own DIY Windwands, or use just plain ribbons.

You can feel the movement of the wind in this song. It’s really natural to move the windwands to the rhythm.

Play: Fly a Kite!

We actually did our closing, and then headed out to fly our kites and play outside without a timeline. If you have a set time limit for your preschool activities (like somewhere to go or kids getting picked up), you could fly the kites before closing if you want.

Sing: GOODBYE SONG

We closed up by reviewing our letter of the day and a few other ideas.

Lastly, we sang our goodbye song and see you next week!

Our next preschool lesson will be Letter L is for Lemons and Limes. It’s a creative one!
